Black Friday: Is it worth it?

By Kanon Cox and Dakota Bond

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving. Its the busiest shopping day of the year and there are sales on almost every thing. We wrote this because we both experienced shopping on black Friday. This what we think .

What is the point of getting up at 4:00 in the morning to fight people at Wal-Mart for $15 off of an ipod touch? We will dig deep to find out :)

Kanons point of view:

When i went to Joplin at 3:45 in the morning the traffic was worse then it is at 1 in the afternoon on a regular day. I went to Best Buy and found tents with blankets and gas heaters outside like some people camped out. Then we had to wait in line for about 30 minutes to just get inside and then we had to wait in line for about an hour just to LOOK at the computers, and they didn’t even have good deals, and they didn’t even have sales on most things. The best deal there was probably $200 off of a $2000 tv.

Dakotah’s point of view:

Well I TRIED to get to the mall but that didn’t work out because they had at least the entire population of Miami inside that place. There was not any parking space unless i wanted to walk 3 blocks and get hit by a car. Unlike kanon i did see some good deals but they were gone because I didn’t get there in time.

We asked Mr. Spencer his opinion on black friday. “Personally I stayed out of all the traffic and shopped online at amazon.com. They had some great deals on blu ray’s and DVD’s. I also got a Play Station 3 for $300 with 2 games included, Infamous and Kill Zone 2, plus a $10 store credit for a future purchase. I know Best Buy had some good deals, but there was nothing I really needed that would make me camp out at 3 am. If I had been in the market for a new TV I would have taken advantage of some of the great deals at Best Buy or Ultimate Electronics, however I just bought a 60 in HDTV this summer.”

So in the end it is up to you to decide if you want to fight the traffic to search for great deals. But we say stay at home and shop on the Internet. Amazon.com has great deals and even has free shipping and no tax!

New teacher interview with Mrs. Nall

We interviewed Mrs. Nall and asked her a few question’s that she was more then happy to answer. Before we start there’s a few things that you should know about Mrs. Nall. She here moved here from Edmond, Oklahoma. She also took a two month trip to Turkey this summer where she taught English and kind of got to experiment with new teaching methods. So we asked her a few questions and here they are along with her answers.

How do you like being back in Miami from Edmond?

At first i was bummed coming back to a small town without all the big events happening. But now that I have been here for a while I’m finding that I like it and instead of feeling like I left the big town for a small town I view it as simplifying and I like it

Do you enjoy teaching english?

Of course, I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t like it. It was my favorite subject in school.

How do you like teaching at will rogers middle school?

It’s a good school and it is where i went to middle school. Some of the teachers I had are still here so its good working here.

What is it like being married to a football coach?

This week has been bad. For me he isn’t the head football coach. I get to see the side of him that most people don’t see. He’s very supportive of me and I’m supportive of him.

Where did you go to college?

First I got my bachelors degree in english from Northeastern State in Talequah and I am working on my Masters degree in teaching english as a second language at University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond.

What year did you graduate from MHS?

I graduated in 1998. Mr. Spencer and I were classmates.

Do you have any other responsibilities at WRMS besides teaching english?

Yes, I am also ELL (English Language Learners) Coordinator. So I help them learn english.

Do you have any hobbies?

No I don’t have any hobbies. I do not have time.

Favorite movie, music, artist, TV shows?

6th grade boys basketball begins!

By: Kaytlin Freeze, Kaylynn Baker, And Ayreann Boyd

The school year has begun and basketball practice is under way. This is the first year they are allowing the 6th graders to play.  This season should really be great! The students are finally getting a chance to understand what team work is all about. So now WRMS not only has 7th and 8th grade teams but 6th graders as well.  We interviewed Coach Spencer to see what he has to say about the upcoming season.

We asked coach Spencer how man games they would play this season and he said “In 7th and 8th grade games we usually end up playing around 15 games.” Since this is the 1st year for 6th graders to play he isn’t very sure how many games they will play, but thinks they will play at least 6 because he knows Grove, Jay, and Locust Grove also have 6th grade teams.

The team has a chance to be pretty good, while some of the 6th graders have a lot of experience, others don’t and if they haven’t played that much in the years before they have a lot to learn. There is about 30 kids out of the 6th grade team but they can only have 15 kids suit up per game. Coach Spencer has a good idea on about 10 kids so far and will rotate the other 5 jerseys among other kids.

Coach Spencer said he has been working them hard every day. “We run a mile for time every week and the kids have to improve their time each time out or they have an extra lap. Braden Hesse has the best time and Christian Folks, Scott Garrett, Ben Pulley, Hunter Forkum, Gabe Simons and others have also had really good running times.

Spencer said, ” It is an exciting opportunity for the 6th graders to start this program and get a head start on learning all the things we need to learn for the future.”

We interviewed some of the kids on the team and here are their responses.

6th grader Caden Mercer said, “I’ve been playing basketball since I was in kindergarten, maybe earlier cause my Dad is a coach. I also play baseball and next year I want to play football.”

Tyler “Candyman” Radebaugh told us that he has played basketball since first grade and that he also loves to play soccer.

Gunner Morgan has played Basketball for 5 to 6 years. He also plays baseball and football.

All 3 students said they are very excited WRMS finally has a 6th grade basketball team!

Back to school dance!

By Franki Miller, Trystan Welch, and Rachel Brock.

The WRMS back to school dance took place a couple weeks ago and as always was put on by Stuco. They work hard every time to prepare everything such as decorations and make sure all the students have a great time. The dance was insanely fun!!! They played songs like The Hoedown Throwdown. They were also selling ice cream for a dollar and it was really good. They also played other good songs like Party in the U.S.A. and Womanizer, as well as traditional crowd favorites like the Macarena and Cha Cha Slide.

Also this month is the Halloween dance were kids get to dress up in costumes and party till there purple, or at least their parents come to pick them up. The decorations were pretty. Student council supplied all of the lights. Overall the dance was amazing and a great way to kick off the new school year!

We talked to a few students from our media class who attended the dance and got their opinions. Kannon Cox said, ”it was okay. It didn’t suck but I think they should be longer. It was too hot and I didn’t do the macarana.” Samantha King said ”It was awesome there was  dancing and food. It was crazy.”

The WRMS media class will be there next time to take pics and report on all the excitement of the Halloween dance!

7th grade football learning on the job.

By Nathaniel Coombes and Tyler Smith

The 7th grade football team is working hard to improve as the season goes on, and with 3 games left they are still looking for their first victory of the season. We interviewed Coach Gilstrap and talked to him about the season so far.

What do you think about the 7th grade football team this year? They are a good bunch of boys that show up every day. They just need to keep working hard and they will continue to get better.

Do you think Hunter Wright aka Freight Train has a future in football? Yes if he keeps improving.

What would do for a reward if the seventh grade won the rest of there games? Probably less running on Fridays.

Do you think they would do better if we all lined up on offense right? Yes, we need to be fundamentally sound and being able to line up correctly would definitely be a start.

What is your favorite defense? Okie

What areas do you think the seventh grade football team needs to improve at the most? Speed and footwork.

What do you enjoy most about coaching? Being able to be around the kids and watch them grow.
